Enjoyed taking Chris and Diane for a meal at The Pheasant, Falstone near Kielder Dam. It was his first trip to Kielder and, of course, he managed to see an osprey flying at the dam. At the time not easy as there were only 2 nests then and Kielder Water and Forest are vast areas for the ospreys to hide in. Good luck with your education work in the Gambia. It is so important to engage the youth in these wonderful birds. It is also very sad that natural history education in our schools in the UK has taken such a backseat. Making links between schools in Gambia and the UK has to have huge educational gains for pupils in both countries.

Chris was a lovely man, I first met him 42 years ago and during that time we enjoyed so many activities- squash, running, walking, gym sessions, hiking and more latterly coffee and scone cafe sessions for a good old natter ( moan! ) . His passion for ospreys was always so evident and he shared many stories with me about his travels, illustrated with some breathtaking photos. Always modest and self deprecating but with a great sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

I loved Chris like another son. He was one in a million, not only did he cut my grass, and tidied the garden, he would come in for a chat, make us both a sandwich, and cup of tea. The first time I saw Chris at Rutland was probably 2014, he was walking back from a shift with his camera & bins & smiled and said hello to us - it was 5R & Maya on the nest. I had no idea what an important person he would become in my learning journey about ospreys - loved seeing his sightings, remember vividly his excitement about setting up Fansu, our paths crossed a few times more and forever grateful to him for all he did for osprey conservation & citizen science.
